Aalto Museum and Museum of Central Finland Extension
Type: Museum / Renovation
Scale: Approx. 300㎡
Location: Jyväskylä, Finland
Year: 2015–2016
Status: Concept Proposal

Nature is not only the natural environment—architectural elements can also form a kind of nature. Aalto's work demonstrates this through built space rooted in place. This project connects two Aalto museums in vegetation, occupying an intermediate state that reveals a "third nature" beyond both.

A continuous path: the new structure is not a building but an artificial landscape. Volumes rest along contours, with stepped terraces forming a public route. The geometry translates Aalto's language, extending the existing water court. Visitors pass the pool, circle trees, ascend winding stairs, and arrive at a green retreat.

Reveal and conceal: traditional museums separate public and technical functions. This design defines space as an exchange medium, exposing conservation workshops through section. Collections and public activities intertwine—artifacts are not cold objects, nor visitors mere passersby; both become part of a cultural event.

Geometry of discovery: the volume mediates between two disparate museum masses. Curves stitch the gap between the two Aalto buildings. At certain points, visitors can touch both museums—a uniquely tactile experience.
