Xi'an Railway Station Competition
Type: Transportation / Public / Urban Design
Area: Approx. 400,000 ㎡
Location: Xi'an, Shaanxi
Year: 2019
Status: Concept Proposal

The "High-Speed Rail New Town" model in China is controversial. Its aims: redirect urban growth from the center via major transport hubs, and leverage rail stations to boost land value and regional competitiveness. Yet most have failed—becoming isolated islands far from cities, or even worsening traffic. The root cause: population flows from countryside to city, while new towns lack necessary amenities—the direction cities want to develop runs counter to where people actually move.

Major transport hubs are urban, not architectural, problems. What role should a railway station play in urban development? This is the core question. We step beyond the brief's functional definition, envisioning a composite building incorporating retail, exhibition, culture, and housing—a "Railway Museum."

The proposal has three parts: a cross-shaped pedestrian bridge housing station functions, its perpendicular intersection of rails and foot traffic organizing passenger flows; a horizontal bridge carrying cultural and commercial programs in a flexible open plan; and vertical towers for office, hotel, exhibition, and apartments—each independent yet structurally integrated. All are unified within a single frame—a "collection of artifacts."

This is a mixed-use urban complex, a micro-city in itself before the surrounding city takes shape. It may not look like a conventional station—but image is secondary. The key is that a railway station must carry enough urban functions to make people stay and settle here.
