Rwanda Chapel
Area: 288 ㎡
Location: Rwanda
Year: 2019
Status: Concept Proposal
The chapel sits on a highland plateau in rural Rwanda, surrounded by pristine forest—a quiet place undisturbed.
Faced with such abundant nature, any intervention risks disruption. We did not want to add a landmark, but to make the building a "backdrop"—a mediator that recalibrates the relationship between artificial and natural.
The chapel is conceived as pure geometry. The only recognizable form is a Latin cross roof rising from a rectangular base. The cross signals religious function and establishes orientation—an anchor and coordinate in the vast wilderness.
The blank exterior is restrained—human-made space as background, nature as protagonist. Openings in multiple directions frame external views, making nature part of the geometric composition and filling the interior with light. Beyond worship, the space is designed to serve the community. The simple geometry takes on complexity when people engage—locals and clergy can meditate, meet, and hold community gatherings.
Here, architecture and nature, humanity and divinity, meet and intertwine. As the building weathers and grows with time, the chapel becomes an inner landscape—a place of quiet contemplation.
