Nanyue School

Type: Education / Campus / Mountain
Area: Approx. 31,000㎡
Location: Longgang District, Shenzhen
Year: 2022
Status: Shortlist

Nanyue School is organized around a small hill on site. The design seeks to let the hill become the campus itself.

Surrounded by high-rises on three sides and natural mountains to the north, the design places the sports field on the northeast as a buffer. The running track encircles the hilltop, preserving existing earthwork. The damaged hillside is repaired with building podiums.

Above, school buildings adopt a settlement form, with courtyards bringing light and air.
Over 60% of earthwork is preserved. Intact natural areas remain untouched; disturbed portions are restored as activity platforms. Teaching blocks rest lightly on the hill like a Hakka village, their volumes rising and falling with the terrain. Openings between clusters frame mountain views.

Adjacent to high-speed rail tracks, the campus uses elevated circulation and vertical greenery as a "natural barrier" against noise. The sports field serves as a "second ground," connecting multiple buildings at grade—with real soil beneath, trees growing through, people standing on it as if on ground, easing density pressure.

Three teaching clusters accommodate lower grades, upper grades, and middle school, linked by a central library. Clusters are independent yet connected, creating a "family-like" atmosphere. A path threads through public spaces, opening to the community.

This is an attempt at density-nature coexistence—a campus with mountain character that becomes part of children's growing memories.
